Barbie Brentlinger

Name: Barbie Brentlinger

Position in County Government: Deputy Clerk, Franklin County Clerk’s Office

How long have you worked for the County?
I started working in the Clerk’s office three years ago on April 1st.

Where did you go to school?
I graduated from Taylor County High School. However, I completed most of my education at schools in Louisville. As a kid we moved frequently. But I have lived in the Frankfort/Lawrenceburg area longer than any other place.

Are you married/do you have kids/family?
I have been married for approximately 16 years. We don’t have any children; but I do have several goldfish. However, I do spend a lot of time with my niece, great nieces and nephews. They are 4, 6, 8 and 12 years old. I consider myself the “cool aunt” and treat them as if they were my own children.

Do you have any hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy reading and decorating. We are always doing some kind of decorating and painting around the house. I really don’t enjoy painting; but I do enjoy the decorating aspect of transforming a room. I also spend a lot of time hanging out with my nieces and nephews.

Explain what you do on the job:
I renew car tags, motorcycle tags, boat tags – basically anything that has a motor. If you stick a motor on your canoe, you are going to need a tag for your canoe. I also assist with title transfers. Additionally, I am one of the dealer specialists for transfers and temporary tags. Also, we do a lot of transfers for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This includes the state fleet and Kentucky State Police vehicles. Finally, on Election Day, everyone in our office pitches in to help ensure that everything runs smoothly.

How does your job impact County residents:
My job definitely impacts everyone in the county. This is especially true for anyone who owns any kind of motor vehicle. We ensure that everyone is legally operating their vehicle under the law. This includes checking the proof of insurance when they come to renew their tags.

Some of our customers are dealing with a recent loss of a loved one. There is a lot of paperwork associated with the probate process. I can really identify with those clients. Sometimes the process can be complicated and it can be easy to become confused. I really try to be especially nice to those customers. I think that it is important to listen and be friendly. I do my best to make their experience with our office as positive as possible during a difficult time in their lives.

What is the favorite part of your job/memorable experiences?
A lot of our customers have a sense of humor. Some of our customers like to tell jokes. Some of them are good and some of them are bad. I enjoy working with the girls in our office. We know how to have a good time.

Tell me something about yourself that people might not readily know:
My Childhood nickname is “cowpoke.” When I was really little whenever I wanted a cookie or cracker, I would call it “cowpoke.” So my siblings started using that as a nickname.
